This was just before an 1100-pound bomb exploded alongside. She sunk within 20 minutes. In 1922, the U.S. War Department classified the Virginia as a target ship for bombing tests, along with her sister ship the USS New Jersey. The New Jersey was bombed first and sunk and then the Virginia.
