Grimm - Three Little Men in Wood

Légende

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale ""The Three Little Men in the Wood"" (also Three Dwarfs) and shows the three little men with the stepdaughter, whom the wicked queen had dressed in paper and told to go pick strawberries. She befriends and is kind to the men who, in turn, help her marry a king. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the llustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded him as illustrator for later editions of the tales.
