The witch is trying to fattenhim up to eat, but Hanzel gives her a bone instead of his finger and she thinks he is still too thin to eat. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the llustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important.
