Grimm's Tale Elves and Shoemaker

Légende

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale ""The Elves and the Shoemaker"" and shows one of the little elves dancing about a fire at night when he and his companions come and fashion shoes for the shoemaker who is needy but always willing to help people. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the llustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded him as illustrator for later editions of the tales.
