This painting by Jerndorff shows the Danish General du Plat during the Battle of Dybbol on April 18, 1864. Plat had command of the force at Sundeved. He led the battle from the front line and arranged for an orderly retreat after the Prussians had taken the fortifications. General du Plat fell when, in order to prevent the retreat from degenerating into flight, he calmly returned from Dybbol along the road toward Sondergorg. August Andreas Jerndorff (1846 -1906) was a Danish painter who is best known for his portraits. The Battle of Dybbol was the key battle of the Second Schleswig War, fought between Denmark and Prussia. The battle was fought on the morning of 18 April 1864, following a siege that began on 7 April. Denmark suffered a severe defeat which ultimately decided the outcome of the war.
