The early 1900s caption reads: ""And well nigh mad was Signy for woe."" In Norse mythology, Signy was the only daughter of the hero Volsung and Ljod. She was also the wife of the ruthless King Siggeir. She had ten brothers, including Sigmund, the youngest. Their story is told in the Scandinavian epic 'Volsunga Saga'.
