In Scandinavian (Norse) mythology, Freya, also spelled Freyja and Freyia, was the goddess of fertility, love and marriage, and light and peace. Her brother was Freyr. When Freya wore Brisingamen, the necklace the dwarves made for her, no man or god could withstand her charms. Myths said she rode in a chariot pulled by two black cats. The cats were a gift from the Norse god Thor. This illustration dates to 1913.
