In Scandinavian (Norse) mythology, the old woman who could defeat Thor was known as Elli. She was one of the servants of Utgarda-Loki living in Jotunheim, the land of the giant. Thor was the god of thunder, and thus the god of might and war. The son of Odin, he had a magical hammer named Mjollnir that returned to him, a belt of strength, and iron gloves.
