The 1913 caption reads"": Hodur took mistle toe from Loki and Loki guided his arm and hurled it at Baldur."" Balder (also Baldr and Baldur) is the Norse god of peace and light and spring. The son of the powerful Odin, he was beloved by the Aesir, the Norse gods. A prophecy foretold that at death, Balder's body was to go to Hel, not Valhalla as he was not a warrior. The Aesir tried to forestall Baldur's death by having all gods, animals, plants, everything swear not to harm Baldur. Only the mistletoe was not included in the oath. Loki, the trickster god, tricked Baldur's blind brother Hodur to shoot at Baldur. Everyone was doing it - but as everything had taken an oath, nothing touched Baldur. Hodur could not see that Loki gave him the mistletoe to shoot. Hodur did and it hit Balder, killing him (shown here).
