The early 1900s caption reads: "" Siguna stood ever by him and caught in a cup the drops of venom falling on Loki."" Loki, the god of evil, was punished by being bound upon a rock in the frozen north. A poisonous adder was hung over him, dropping its venom upon his face. His beautiful and faithful wife Sigyn crouches by his side, and saves him from the poison by catching it in a little cup. When the cup is full, she must empty it into the sea; and, twist as he may, the burning venom drips on Loki's face. The earthquakes were said to be caused by his mad writhings, with which he tried to escape his agony."" In Norse mythology, Loki is the personification/deity of mischief. He murdered Baldr, the god of joy and peace, and was punished by being bound to three slabs of stone with the entrails of his son Narfi.
