This illustration shows Tryggvi escaping from land of Wick. Tryggvi ""the Pretender"" was a Viking chieftain who lived in the early eleventh century. He came from ""west across the sea"" (probably from the Norse settlements in England and Ireland). Usually pronounced 'week', the word ""wick"" comes from the Old Norse vik meaning an inlet or small, and mostly open, bay. Often U-shaped and with one or more beach, wicks would have been popular landing places for the incoming Norse settlers. This illustration by Gordon Browne dates to 1913.
