This illustration shows the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven and the Countess Therese. Beethoven (1770-1827), a composer and pianist is one of the most admired composers in the history of Western music. His works rank amongst the most performed of the classical music repertoire and span the transition from the Classical period to the Romantic era in classical music. Countess Therese was a member of the Hungarian nobility. One of Beethoven's students, she was the dedicatee for his Piano Sonata No. 24. Some speculated that she, not her sister Josephine who is generally accepted as the addressee, may have been the intended recipient of Beethoven's letter to the ""Immortal Beloved."".
