Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Considered the most important Spanish artists of the time, he is honored as one of the last of the Old Masters and one of the first of the Moderns. His early paintings were optimistic and jolly, as the years passed, his works became very pessimistic. A highly regarded portrait painter, Goya did this portrait of the Spanish king Charles IV in 1789. Often it is known as Charles IV in Red. He also did a famous painting of Charles IV and his family.
