Shown here is Madame Marcella Sembrich as Mimi in La Boheme. Sembrich was a famous Polish prima donna who was born in 1859 and was an accomplished violinist and pianist before her voice devloped. Studied at Leipsic Conservatory under Wilhelm Stengel and then became his wife. Made debut in 1877 as singer in I Puritani. Visted US first in 1883. Her greatest successes were in Mozart's operas and has sung in Barber of Seville, Martha, La Traviata, La Sonnambula. Two of her greatest roles were as Mimi in La Boheme and the leading role in The Daughter of the Regiment. She was also a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company.
