Oranges and Oil in California
Légende
This vintage postcard form the 1930s shows orange groves and oil wells in Santa Fe Springs, California. Today the city is one of the Gateway Cities of southeast Los Angeles County. The Union Oil Company of California began drilling in this town in 1907. The wells failed, but in 1921, the well known as the Union-Bell blew in as a gusher and the area soon earned the reputation of being one of the richest pools of petroleum in the States. The area, since the early 1900s, had also become known for its orange groves, which you can see here share the landscape with the oil wells.
