This letter dated March 16, 1917, is from the Boston, Massachusetts, Office of Civil Service Commission, to Jose D.A. Bettencourt in New Bedford, offering him a job as fireman at $17.50 per week at the Quittacas Pumping Station in Rochester. The Registrar of Labor, who signed the letter, notes that since Rochester is about 12 miles from New Bedford, it would be difficult to get to and so anyone employed at the pumping station would necessarily have to live in Rochester.
