Ostia Shipping Mosaic
Légende
Ostia Antica, located at the mouth of the Tiber River, was the port city of ancient Rome. Uncovered there are mosaics that acted as ""storefront signs"" for commercial businesses, mostly shipping, grain merchants, from around the Mediterranean. Here we see two ships with the symbol of a grain measure in between, signifying that the shop here was related to the sale of grain. Today, this area is called the Square of the Corporations. The photo dates to 1970 and the grass clippings were used to cover the mosaic from time to time to protect it from the sun.
